Immigration

We've gotten newspapers the last two days to use for moving, but I read two articles that left me feeling a little sad. They can be found here and here. I know immigration is a tense subject where emotions can run high. This post isn't intended to change anyone's minds, just to express my feelings about these specific incidents.

1- An undocumented immigrant went on a LDS mission and was arrested on his way home.
2- A Mexican grandmother is trying to get custody of her granddaughter who was taken away from the mother and placed with a family here.
3- People are facing deportation after being scammed by a woman in their LDS ward who promised to help them get the documents they needed.

Like Rebecca Walsh said, immigration can be a tricky situation with no easy answers. The third situation especially makes me disheartened. Someone used religion to get people to trust them, took their money, and didn't follow through. Yes, you may feel these people have done something wrong in coming here. But that doesn't mean they deserve to have their money taken away. And supposedly these people were promised work visas if they cooperated with testifying against her, but when the case against her fell through, apparently so did that promise. Immigrants are treated this way all the time. I have heard of many situations where people hired undocumented immigrants as help, and then fire them on a Friday without paying them for that last week they worked. The immigrant can't do anything about it without fearing deportation. It just seems like a lose-lose situation for many of these people. I don't have the answers, but it doesn't really seem like the people currently in charge do either.
